Maldives’ star players leave for Brunei team trials

Maldives’ star strikers Ibrahim “Oppo” Fazeel and Ali “Dhaganday” Ashfaq left last night for Brunei to play for a Brunei team at the invitation of former Maldives’ national football team coach Bulgarian Stoichkov Ivanov.
“I will be there for about two weeks,” Oppo told Haveeru.
Dhaganday is presently negotiating to transfer to VB Sports from New Radiant.
The Brunei team is offering each player US$9,000 a month should Oppo and Dhaganday become successful in the trials.
Though Brunei is one of the richest states in the world, football enjoys a poor status there. Hence, Brunei is usually represented at Malaysia’s Super League.

New Radiant beat Victory to lift President's Cup

"New Radiant is a team not a One man team"
Victory coach Mauroof Ahmed’s (Maattey) dream of becoming a great grandfather in Maldivian football was forced to keep colourless as they felt into the hands of arch rivals, New Radiant, twice in President’s Cup to blow away the chance of winning the prestigious trophy three years in a row for a third occasion. New Radiant, who beat Victory in the opening game with a late goal from Ashfaag, came much stronger in the final played tonight and turned things very much into their side within the first 45 minutes.
New Radiant, who missed Ashfaag and Shifan for suspension, took the lead through captain Assad in the 22nd minute. In a half fully dominated by the blues, Assad’s cross into Victory penalty area ended up into the net when Akram tried to head the ball and the same time keeper Faisal tried to save it, but missed the ball completely.
Prior to the opener, both New Radiant and Victory missed a great effort to break the deadlock. First it was Shamveel’s 7th minute solo effort, which missed the target nearly and a minute later Shiyam, for Victory, failed to pass the ball to unmarked Luciano inside New Radiant penalty area and keeper Sadun attended the ball quickly.
In the 28th minute Luciano fired a shot over the cross bar and in the 36th minute Shimaz (Kocky) doubled the lead for the blues. Keeper Faisal missed the weak shot which crossed the line slowly.
With two goals up, New Radiant played comfortably and Victory failed to show their true level.
In the dying minutes of first half, New Radiant scored one more; Idris’ header hit the cross bar and Shamveel scored comfortably from the rebounded ball.
As expected, the second period happened to be a more physical one rather than an eye catching display. It was all fouls and free kicks through out the half, but in the 61st minute Idris could have scored New Radiant’s fourth of the night but he shot onto a goal covered by only Anil went out.
In the 65th minute Rodriguez scored Victory’s first goal and New Radiant was forced to clear a shot from Lareef on the goal line in the 81st minute.
That gave an indication that the reds are still alive in their dream of winning the title three years in a row for a third occasion, but it didn’t happen this time.
New Radiant, who beat Victory 1-0 in the opening game, defeated them 3-1 tonight to lift the title. Players, officials and supporters from both sides clashed at the final whistle and the security officials had to intervene to control the situation.
Shamveel Gasim of New Radiant was named as the man of the match and the player of the tournament and team mate Sadun Dhevida was awarded with best goal keeper award.
Ismail Mohamed of VB Sports received fair play player award and Victory won the fair play team award.
After the match New Radiant coach reacted happily for winning the title and said since they lost Dhivehi League to Victory they were very much in need to win this title. He also added that he advised his players about the absence of Shifan and Ashfaaq.
“We wanted to win this title, because we lost the league”
“Though we missed Ashfaag and Shifan, I advised the players that this is a team not a team depending on a single player”
Gerd also admitted that he didn’t expect such a lead in the first half and explained the players during the half time that the game isn’t over yet.
“I thought this will be a tough game, I didn’t expect such a lead in the first half”
“I explained the players during the half time that we still didn’t win the game and put double effort to win the game”
“We dominated the game, our squad was not enough. Shamveel was injured and it was hard to make a substitution”
Meanwhile New Radiant captain reacted on his opening goal.
“I didn’t expect such an easy goal, the pitch was wet” Assad said.
“We had a very high hope when we come here for this match” He added.
On the other hand Victory assistant coach Suzeynu didn’t expect such a lead from New Radiant as well and added more to it saying he never expect such a lead in his whole life.
“I never expected to see such a lead to be taken in my whole life” He said.
“ In this level, New Radiant didn’t deserve such a lead”
“Our keeper’s performance was the turning point. That was not because of experience, but a coincidence”

Thinadhoo Zuvaanunge Club and Reynis Ginthi has ended their fixtures in the ongoing Zone 1-8 tournament with a draw. Both teams were knocked out of the tournament before the match and people didn't anticipate a thrilling encounter. But it turned out to be a fascinating encounter with 6 yellow cards and 3 red cards in the match. All three red cards were shown to Thinadhoo players and surprisingly one of their players left the pitch without notifying to the referee.
Thinadhoo were 3 -2 down till the last minute with just 7 players on the field. But they scored to level the match in the last minute of the extra time with a superb free kick. The match ended from the goal.

Thinadhoo Sports came strong in the second half and as a result managed to score two quick goals. One from Ibrahim Shafraaz and the other from Haleel Abdullah.
But the turn over point of the match was when goal keeper of Thinadhoo, Hussein Firhan brought down a Reynis Ginthi player inside the penalty area. Referee Ismail Izhaan hestitated for a minute, but assistant referee Thoufeeq showed it for a penalty and referee followed his assistant referee and showed marching orders to Firhan.
Thinadhoo players were frustrated because of the decision and Ibrahim Shareef of Thinadhoo left the pitch and stayed on the bench. As their regular substitutions were over, one of the players wore the goal keeper's jersey. This is the second time in this year in National Grounds an outfield player replaced the keeper.
But in that frustration Mohamed Shahid was shown a yellow card for unsporty behaviour which was followed by a red card as a yellow card was shown to him previously.
Mohamed Ismail scored from the penalty for Reynis Ginthi. Another red card was shown in the last minute for Mohamed Ihsan of Thinadhoo for unsporting behaviour. The score was leveled in the last minute of the extra time by Samadh Ali The curved free kick was mishandled by the keeper and went straight in to the empty goal. Both teams ended the competition with only one point in three games and Thinadhoo finished ahead of Reynis Ginthi, thanks to their better goal difference.

New Radiant cruise to the cup final
The struggling New Radiant heals the AFC Cup pain by cruising into the FA Cup final today by beating arch rival Victory.
Blues one and only goal came from substitute player Arfiu in the 71st minute of the game.
In today's match even though New Radiant dominated the first half, they could not score any goal against a superb defensive Victory side. But the whole scene was changed when Aafiu was substituted and his superb build up lead to a superb goal.
New Radiant got some incredible open chances, but their strikers were unable to convert any of those beating Victory's goal keeper, Imran. Imran managed to save some incredible shots by Ashfaaq and Idris as well.
Shamveel took a wonderful shot outside the penalty area, and that time even Imran managed to save the ball.
Shamveel got another golden opportunity when he headed the ball all alone inside the penalty area. His header went out for a goal kick.
Victory also got a golden opportunity. Ashfaan's free kick was saved brilliantly by Sadhun. The ball was moving to the top corner of the goal. But Sadhun dived to his right saving the ball.
There were no changes in the line up during half time.
The fortunes for New Radiant were turned to their side, from a superb build up between Arfiu and Idris. Arfiu passed the ball to Idris who was around in the center circle. He dribbled past a defender and gave a through pass back to Arfiu and then from a very tight angle almost near the goal line, his shot went in to the corner of the goal.
He was yellow carded as he took off his jersey during his goal celebration.
Victory then stared to push all their players forward and got some numerous chances to equalize.
Shiyam lost a great chance as he was all alone inside the penalty area. His marker was never around him, but his shot was straight to Keeper Sadhun's hands.
The match ended with the same score line.
After the match, New Radiant coach, Gerd said that he was delighted about his team's performance during the game.
“I am satisfied with the performance of the team. I am not only satisfied with the results, but the performance was good today. We dominated the possession and controlled the game.”
Gerd also explained his game strategy and said that he wanted a win in today's game.
“We did not win against Victory this season and we wanted to change that. We came here to win in the 90 minutes and we did it. I did not practice penalty kicks during yesterday's practice even as I did not want to shoot penalties. I wanted to win in the 90 minutes”
He also thanked the supporters and said the team was good enough to get back after the loss in Singapore .
Meanwhile, Victory's coach Mauroof said that both teams were even and New Radiant had the luck today on their side.
“We played well and they had the luck on their side today.”
He also congratulated New Radiant and the team's supporters for their win
“I congratulate New Radiant and their supporters for the first win against us this year”
Mauroof did not want to give up and said that there is always next time.
“In sports there is always next time and our management and the players would consider it seriously for the coming tournaments. The team with youngsters has proved they are worthwhile. We need to strengthen the team if we want to win and the management would consider it as well”
New Radiant, who won this tournament in the last two years, have the opportunity to make it three in row now.
New Radiant will face either VB sports or Valencia in the final, the second semi final between Valencia and VB sports will be played on next Friday. Many believes this is going to be the first real challenge for the new comer, VB sports.
